Obstetrics and Gynaecology (regularly abbreviated to OB/GYN or O&G) are the two surgical specialties that deal with the woman’s reproductive organs, in which are habitually united to form a particular medical speciality and postgraduate training program. It requires many years of education and preparation to become an Obstetricians and Gynecologists: 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 4 to 7 years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty chosen. Some medical schools provide a combined undergraduate and medical school programs during six years.
Premedical students be obliged to complete undergraduate work in physics, biology, mathematics, English, and inorganic and organic chemistry. Students also receive courses in the humanities and the social sciences. Some students volunteer at local hospitals or clinics to get experience in the health professions.
Nature of the work
Obstetricians and gynaecologists are specialists whose focus is health of females. They are responsible for general medical care for females, but also give care related to pregnancy and the reproductive system.
They are trained to deal with the prevention, analysis, and treatment of general health problems, but they focus on illnesses specific to the female anatomy, such as breast and cervical cancer, urinary tract and pelvic illnesses, and hormonal illnesses. Obstetricians and gynaecologists also focus in childbirth, treating and counselling women throughout their pregnancy, from giving prenatal diagnoses to delivery and postpartum care.
