Pulmonology is commonly considered a field of internal medicine that deals with illnesses of the lungs and the respiratory tract. It is also called pulmonary medicine and respiratory medicine. Pulmonology is classified as an internal medicine subspecialty. Because of the diversity of clinical problems encountered, knowledge of internal medicine and other specialties is obligatory in order to achieve certification.

How to become a pulmonologist
To become a pulmonary specialist, students need to achieve an education in Internal Medicine and complete graduation in an accredited medical school, and then they need to complete a residency program of 3 years. Also students need to get certification as a pulmonologist from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

A pulmonary specialist can also be helpful in cases with extraordinarily severe or common exacerbations in the hope of identifying additional causes for unstable illness.
